A note on Epiphany

At Epiphany we celebrate another part of the story of Christ's birth, the visit of the magi & their recongnition of Jesus as the Messiah. Mentioned only in the gospel of St Mathew, they are described as 'wise men from the east'. Later tradition fixed their number as three, (probably because of the three gifts), made them kings and gave them the names of Caspar, Melchoir & Balthasar.

Jesus, acknowledged as the Messiah by the magi (Gentiles) is now recongnised by Simeon and Anna, when he is presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both a light to the gentiles and the glory of God's people Isreal.

Simeon's final words to Mary 'And a sword will pierce your own soul also' turn our thoughts away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mysteries of Easter. You can read a full account in Luke 2.21 - 40)
